A day in the life of a Yoga Student

My day starts at 6am. I try to wake at this time most days as we have learnt in Ayurveda that waking before the sun rises brings peace of mind and freshness to the senses, it also allows me plenty of time to get ready for the day without having to feel rushed.

Since studying I have started by own morning Yoga practice which takes about an hour. In this practice I try to incorporate any new postures we have learnt that week or any new sequences so what we have learnt stays top of mind.

Following my practice I feel energized and ready for the day. I get myself organized and head off to class which starts at 9.15.  This week we are learning about pre-natal Yoga so we are practicing some of the postures we would teach in a pre-natal class. We also break down each posture and the safety factors we would need to consider.

Now it’s time to have short tea break before we head off to teach our community class. These are taught on site at Wellpark College and each week two students lead the teaching. We all collaborate together on what we are going to teach for the day and then we all take part in the class along with any students who attend from the community. Following the class we debrief on what worked well and what we need to improve on. It amazing being to put all our skills we have learnt into practice and it’s really valuable in illustrating just how much we have learnt during our Diploma.

Class is finished for the day so I head off to teach a private client a Yoga class. I’m now headed home to do some work on a couple of assignments – one where we design our very own Yoga class and another where we illustrate the benefits of Pranayama on mental and physical health, I also fill out my Yoga journal where I reflect on my practice. This includes what I have enjoyed, what I have struggled with and where I have grown. It’s really amazing to see how much I have grown in body and mind since the start of the Diploma.

It’s now time to wind down for the day. It’s been a busy but rewarding day and having my daily yoga practice has certainly helped me to stay centered throughout it all.
