Since 2010, Wellpark College has been proud to offer New Zealand’s first Bachelor of Naturopathic and Herbal Medicine Degree. The Bachelor of Naturopathic and Herbal Medicine combines the skills of phenomenology, the study of experience, deep observation and consciousness of the human condition learned over centuries with modern-day science to bring the best in complementary medicine.

Students come to Wellpark College of Natural Therapies to Study for their Bachelor of Naturopathic and Herbal Medicine for many reasons. Most have already realised that a Holistic approach to the bodies ailments can have outstanding effects on persons well being and health. The reasons that they choose to Study Natural Medicine with Wellpark College is not only to be taught by amazingly supportive teachers, with many years of teaching and practical experience, but to be in a 1st Class (NZQA Highly Recommended) learning environment with like-minded people who have a passion for Integrated Natural Health.

The foundation of naturopathy is that the body has built-in healing abilities. Instead of focusing on specific diseases, a naturopath focuses on the whole person, taking into account the physical, emotional, environmental, energetic and spiritual aspects of wellness. A naturopath uses naturally occurring medicines to treat disorders, recommends dietary or lifestyle changes to help prevent disease and offers complimentary medical advice.

Wellpark College is an Education member of the World Naturopathic Federation and has been involved with helping the WNF achieve its goal of integration of Naturopathy into mainstream health care. Naturopathic Medicine, or Naturopathy, is based on the belief that the body can heal itself. Naturopaths believe the body has the ability to repair itself and recover from illness if it is supported by a healthy environment.

Naturopaths aid and support that healing process by incorporating a variety of alternative health methods based solely on the needs of the individual. These methods and treatments rely exclusively on natural remedies, such as sunlight, fresh air, water, a healthy diet, herbs and nutritional supplementation.

Moreover, most naturopaths have extensive training and schooling in natural therapies, like nutrition, hydrotherapy, herbs, plants/flowers and massage, just to name a few.

In order to become a qualified naturopath, students must complete at least a 3 year advanced diploma or bachelor degree program and a designated number of hours of supervised clinical practice. Finally, the student can apply for acceptance into one or more of the recognised New Zealand or international naturopathy associations to become entitled to enter into professional clinical practice. While becoming a naturopath requires a serious commitment of time and money, students can apply for NZQA funding.

Since naturopathy draws on such a comprehensive system of chemistry and pharmacology, it’s best to get a firm grounding in the therapy. You might like to start off with a short course, before diving into formal education. If you haven’t studied for some time, this can be a suitable way to ease into it before making a major commitment. If you want to practise as a naturopath, however, you’ll want to undertake a longer course of study. A Bachelor of Naturopathy will take around 3 years full-time or seven years part-time. You’ll receive an in-depth understanding of naturopathy through various theoretical and practical components. While becoming a naturopath requires a serious commitment of time and money, NZQA funding can be applied for.

Because a naturopath treats the whole person, becoming a naturopath requires successful completion of a comprehensive study program at a naturopathic college or college of natural medicine that includes a broad range of disciplines, including:

  Anatomy and physiology

  Herbal pharmacology

  Nutrition

  Natural diagnostic procedures

Massage and aromatherapy and health assessment, and more.

While becoming a naturopath requires a serious commitment of time and money, NZQA funding can be applied for.

You may want to open a private practice or work along with other professionals in a wellness clinic. Some naturopaths become consultants in health food stores and other retail environments. Opportunities also exist in resorts, aboard cruise liners, in day spas and other establishments.

The Wellpark Bachelor of Naturopathic and Herbal Medicine will provide you with the skills to embark on a variety of rewarding careers:

  naturopathic practitioner in private practice

  within an integrated medical practice

  corporate or company naturopath

professional advisor to a health product company

consultant to a health shop or pharmacy

  teaching or community education

Graduates can apply for registration with the Natural Health Council (NZ) or the New Zealand Charter of Health Practitioners and become members of Naturopaths of New Zealand, the New Zealand Society of Naturopaths and the Australian Natural Therapists Association.

Testimonials

Choosing to study to be a Naturopath, Nutritionist, and Herbalist through Wellpark College as opposed to a university, was the best decision of my life.

As I know what I am studying now is the future of medicine. I also love the small class sizes so everyone can easily ask questions during classes, and we all have as much one-on-one time with tutors as we need.

I have met people who have studied Nutrition/Dietetics through a university and then studied Naturopathy at Wellpark afterward to expand on their knowledge, but I have not met anyone who has done it the other way around, because once you have discovered Wellpark, you know it is exactly what you have been searching for
