Evening Primrose – Herb of the month of May
Evening Primrose – Herb of the month of May
We have Evening Primrose growing in the College gardens and we all enjoy the cheery yellow flowers that open on overcast days, but it is the seeds, cold-pressed into oil that we have come to know this plant for. Evening Primrose oil is a common supplement sold in most pharmacies and natural health shops around the world.
Originating from Mexico the Evening Primrose plant was widely used by Native Americans as a source of food as well as to treat bruises and digestive upsets. In the 17th Century, the plant was taken to Europe where it became known as “Kings Cure-All” and was used as the name suggests to treat a variety of ailments from eczema to arthritis.
These days we use the oil extracted from the seeds because we know that it is high in essential fatty acids, linoleic (LA) and gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). GLA is an important anti-inflammatory and is renowned for helping to ease joint discomfort and promote healthy skin. Evening Primrose Oil also assists with hormone production and balance and is often taken to ease PMS and to help during menopause.
This common garden plant has so many uses and is a welcome addition to any herb garden.
