Basil Essential Oil for June

Essential Oil of the Month of June - Basil Gemini starts from 22nd May – 22nd June, Early Indian astrologers saw this sign as a Divine Lovers, symbolizing male and female. Its obvious affinities with Mercury, made Gemini people have very lively minds: quick, versatile, enquiring, sociable, chatty. They may have a higher–than–average IQ and are often brilliant speakers or writers. With so much emphasis on the mind, some Geminis become great worriers. Physically, Gemini has affinities with the arms, the lungs and the central nervous system. What Gemini needs is to learn to switch off and relax so they can sleep and rest to welcome the next morning. June Blends I relax. I rest. I sleep. Ensure you have a wind-down period before bedtime. During this winter, have a bath at least...

Evening Primrose – Herb of the month of May

Evening Primrose -  Herb of the month of May   We have Evening Primrose growing in the College gardens and we all enjoy the cheery yellow flowers that open on overcast days, but it is the seeds, cold-pressed into oil that we have come to know this plant for. Evening Primrose oil is a common supplement sold in most pharmacies and natural health shops around the world. Originating from Mexico the Evening Primrose plant was widely used by Native Americans as a source of food as well as to treat bruises and digestive upsets. In the 17th Century, the plant was taken to Europe where it became known as "Kings Cure-All" and was used as the name suggests to treat a variety of ailments from eczema to arthritis. These...

Tips for going Sugar Free

Tips for Going Sugar-Free Spring clean your diet with these top Tips for Going Sugar Free! High Quality Protein helps to balance blood sugar.  It keeps our blood sugar more stable so we don’t experience a rollercoaster of sugar highs and lows throughout the day.  Sources of high quality protein include meat, chicken, fish, eggs, legumes (lentils, chickpeas, beans, tofu, tempeh), protein powders (whey, pea, rice), and lesser amounts are found in whole grains (quinoa, millet, buckwheat, amaranth, brown rice, oats), dairy products, nuts and seeds.  Include a protein food with each meal and snack to prevent sugar cravings experienced with blood sugar imbalance. Good fats slow digestion and the release of sugar into our bloodstream.  Fats are satiating, which stop us feeling hungry for much longer than carbohydrates.  Healthy fats include...

Why we need Calcium to maintain bone health as we age

Calcium and bone health We all know that calcium is a vital mineral for the development and maintenance of strong bones and teeth.  This information is focussed on the role of calcium in bone health.  However, calcium is also needed for other processes, such as muscle contraction, blood clotting and cellular signalling. Generally, we reach our peak bone mass at around the age of 30.  As we approach our mid to late 30s, we gradually start to lose bone mass and this is particularly relevant for women of menopausal age.  Oestrogen protects against bone loss, by reducing bone cells being broken down and reabsorbed into the blood.  At menopause, oestrogen levels drop and the rate of bone loss accelerates for about the next 5 to 10 years,...

Jelly is a Superfood!

Jelly is a Superfood! It’s not a typo.  I recommend jelly for dessert, daily!  Not Jelly Tips or jelly and ice-cream (unless it’s coconut nice-cream!).  Jelly is simply made from gelatin and 100% fruit juice.  All the goodness comes from gelatin!  Gelatin is made by boiling animal bones, cartilage and skin to extract the collagen.  Collagen is an important protein that connects the muscles, bones and skin in animals and humans.  Gelatin boasts all the same health benefits as collagen as they contain the same amino acids.   Top 10 reasons to incorporate gelatin into your daily diet: Gelatin is almost 98-99% protein. The amino acids in gelatin and collagen make up about 30% of the proteins in our body.  Protein is required for bones, muscles, skin, hair,...

My journey as a nutrition student at Wellpark College

I have been a passionate foodie and experimental cook all my life. I have struggled with my weight, suffering from depression, insomnia, fatigue and fertility issues amongst other things. I was always trying the latest fad diet in an attempt to lose weight only to regain what I’d lost and more. In my early twenties, I finally decided to take control of my health. I was introduced to the amazing work of British nutritionist Patrick Holford, and since then I have devoured any information and research on healthy eating and lifestyle habits, incorporating them into my life. It wasn’t until my late thirties that I had the opportunity to complete a Diploma in Nutrition at Wellpark College of Natural Therapies. My journey with Wellpark has definitely been...

Is it Possible to Eat Out and still be Healthy?

Is it Possible to Eat Out and still be Healthy? You've been sticking to a healthy diet, then you get invited out for dinner, what should you choose from the menu to allow you to maintain your healthy eating plan.Top 10 Tips… Water is the cheapest and healthiest drink – add berries, citrus fruits or mint to naturally flavour water, instead of sugar-laden soft drinks. Eat your salad or vegetables first – fill your stomach with goodness first, you’re more likely to eat vegetables at the beginning than the end. Avoid white carbs – white bread, white rice and white pasta offer no nutritional benefit to the body, unless they’re cold (resistant starch). Skip the filler foods like bread – filler foods include all processed carbs e.g. bread, rice, pasta, potatoes and flour products. Choose brown...
